Granite countertop polishing before and after

How to Fix Dull Granite: Causes, DIY Tips and When to Call a Pro

Granite is one of the toughest countertop materials there is, but it doesn’t stay shiny forever. If your granite looks cloudy, hazy or dull, the good news is it can almost always be brought back. Here’s what causes it, what you can try yourself, and when it’s time for professional polishing.

Why Granite Gets Dull

  • Cleaner buildup: many household cleaners and “granite polishes” leave a film that builds up and looks cloudy.
  • The wrong cleaners: harsh, acidic or abrasive cleaners can wear down the sealer and the polish over time.
  • Hard water: mineral deposits around sinks and faucets leave a dull, chalky haze.
  • Everyday wear: years of pots, dishes and wiping slowly wear the polish in high-use areas.
  • Old sealer: worn or poorly applied sealer can leave the surface blotchy and dull.

What You Can Try Yourself

  1. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner: skip vinegar, bleach and all-purpose sprays.
  2. Remove buildup: warm water and a soft microfiber cloth can lift light residue. Dry the surface afterward.
  3. Tackle hard water spots gently: use a stone-safe hard water remover, never acidic cleaners.
  4. Use a stone polish made for granite: a quality spray polish adds shine and helps repel water between cleanings.

If the dullness is still there after a good cleaning, the polish itself is worn, and no spray will bring it back. That’s when the surface needs to be professionally refinished.

How We Restore Dull Granite

We deep clean the granite to remove buildup, then refinish dull areas or the full countertop with specialty diamonds and polishing paste to bring back a factory-like shine. While we’re there, we can fix chips, cracks and uneven seams, recaulk the backsplash and sink, and seal the stone to protect it.

Have quartz or Corian instead? Those can’t be polished like granite, but we refinish them with fine specialty sandpaper and pads to remove scratches and dullness. After corian and quartz polishing and repair by Prestige Grout

How to Keep Granite Shiny

  • Wipe up spills right away, especially oils, wine and juice
  • Clean daily with a pH-neutral stone cleaner
  • Use trivets and cutting boards
  • Have it resealed when water stops beading on the surface

Frequently Asked Questions

Can dull granite be made shiny again?

Yes. In most cases, professional polishing brings granite back to a like-new shine without replacing it.

Why does my granite look cloudy?

Usually it’s buildup from cleaners or hard water. If cleaning doesn’t fix it, the polish is worn and needs to be refinished.

Will sealing make granite shiny?

No. Sealer protects against stains, but it doesn’t add shine. Shine comes from polishing the stone itself.

How long does granite polishing take?

Most kitchen countertops are done in a day.
